By: Tatiana Sandino and Kyle Thomas
Abstract
“The Container Store” teaching note describes how the case can be taught to MBA or executive education students who are interested in developing a strong culture, implementing strategy, and managing growth. The authors wrote the case for teaching MBA courses such as “Designing Competitive Organizations” and “Operations Management” as well as teaching it successfully in executive education courses such as “Driving Corporate Performance.”
The case can be taught to illustrate the challenges of setting up management systems in growing companies; describe systems used to promote company goals and core values throughout an organization; discuss how a company can best leverage its investments in people through empowerment; and explore the challenges of going public.
