China and India in comparative perspective
Description
China and India both have the potential of becoming economic superpowers. The conventional wisdom is that China is far ahead of India in economic reforms and economic performance. Together with my HBS colleague, Professor Tarun Khanna, we are re-examining this conventional perspective and we attempt to offer a more nuanced perspective. This perspective identifies some of the substantial strengths of China--its macroeconomic performance and the pace of its external reforms-but also recognizes some of China's glaring microeconomic weaknesses, all relative to India. We hope to be able to build a coherent framework to account for these contrasts and to draw both policy and managerial implications from this research.
