Immigrant Policymakers and Entrepreneurs
Description
Since completing his prize-winning biography of Joseph Schumpeter in 2007 and his book, American Business since 1920 in 2009, Professor McCraw has been working on two new books about immigrants who came to the United States and became important policymakers and successful entrepreneurs. This is a major, multi-year research project that will cover the years 1747 to the present. The first book, tentatively titled Immigrant Financial Founders, will examine the contributions of Robert Morris, Alexander Hamilton, Albert Gallatin, and other policymakers. (The HBS campus has buildings named for Morris, Hamilton, and Gallatin.) This book will be published in 2012.
The second book, scheduled to appear in 2015, will cover ten industries and a long list of important entrepreneurs who came to the United States from abroad. At least 60 of their names would be familiar to any student of business history and at least 20 to almost any citizen. Professor McCraw's approach to the research for both books combines business and economic history with social history and uses techniques of biography, statistics, and industry analysis. In addition to the books, interim products will include three or four articles.
