Team, Individual, and Organizational Learning From Experience in Two High-Hazard Industries
Description
There are several interrelated questions at the group, individual, and organizational levels. The question at the group level is, "What is the relationship of incident review team composition, in terms of expertise, hierarchical level, and cognitive style and complexity, on the quality and depth of the review and the resultant team learning, considering team process and task complexity?" At the individual level, the research question is, "In what ways does participation on an incident review team change mental models and cognitive style?" The organizational question is, "How does plant improvement or organizational learning depend upon team and individual learning?" Two studies are ongoing: a correlational study of nuclear power plants' incident review teams and a field study of incident review and plant improvement teams at nuclear power and chemical process plants. The intent is to examine specific hypotheses but also to provide opportunities for discovery and theory-building.
