Conditional Cash Transfers in Brazil
Description
(with Leonardo Bursztyn and Daniel Carvalho)
Conditional Cash Transfer programs are becoming increasingly popular throughout the developing world. Brazil alone spends close to $1Bn every year on such programs. These programs aim to alleviate poverty through two channels (i) direct cash transfers and (ii) human capital development. We will be working with an NGO, Mission child, that pays these transfers conditional on school attendance. Among many other things, we will be exploring (i) if group monitoring is beneficial in this environment and (ii) who makes the schooling decision, child or parent?
