Overview
Description
My research focuses on cross-boundary teaming within and between organizations and on how leaders enable the complex collaborations through which execution and innovation are accomplished in a dynamic environment. In one stream of my research, I study collaboration among diverse experts undertaking innovation. In this stream, teaming across industry boundaries is increasingly important in the production of crucial innovations upon which society’s future depends. Yet, teaming and learning among diverse experts, facing high uncertainty, requires facing both interpersonal and technical risks. My research explores how people manage these risks, and why it matters that they do, in contexts ranging from the emergency room, to the factory, to the built environment, to the executive suite. A second stream of my research examines how leaders create organizational agility as needed to thrive in fast-paced, challenging, uncertain industry contexts. The focus is on how leaders can transcend tradeoffs through designing operations that promote flexibility and speed in meeting shifting customer needs.
