Vineyard Wind Starts Spinning: Overcoming Onshore Challenges to Offshore Wind
By: Rosabeth Moss Kanter and Jacob A. SmallIn 2024, the offshore wind industry was taking off globally but slow to catch on in the United States. Growth of the U.S. offshore wind industry was complicated by a variety of hurdles including a sparse supply chain and workforce, lack of policy surrounding the ocean-area leasing, a significant upfront investment in infrastructure, and pockets of community opposition. It was uncertain whether the U.S. would establish its own independent offshore wind ecosystem, or opt to import specific components — even large project developers — from across the Atlantic. On a decade-long project trajectory, Vineyard Wind 1 became the first large-scale U.S. offshore wind. While the power was being generated out at sea, much of Vineyard Wind’s decade-long work had taken place onshore, including with stakeholders in Martha’s Vineyard, close to where power was generated, Barnstable on Cape Cod where power arrived on land, and New Bedford, where turbine parts were assembled. This case explores Vineyard Wind's leadership in U.S. renewable energy, building the right community relationships to drive success.
