Will I Belong?

“The section—the incredibly diverse group of 94 classmates, hand-picked to create a representative microcosm of the entire +900 class —has been the most wonderful unexpected gift in my HBS journey. To them I am grateful for the many lessons they have taught me, but, most importantly, to them I am grateful for giving me the freedom to be my authentic self.”

In a milestone for our mission to educate leaders who make a difference in the world, all first year students last month completed a short new course on the Social Purpose of the Firm (SPF), organized by the Institute for the Study of Business in Global Society (BiGS). Over two days, 11 faculty members taught five new cases involving companies ranging from @microsoft to Sweden’s @northvolt electric battery maker, raising questions about the role business plays in addressing environmental and societal issues. Read more about the course and the cases studied at the link in our bio.

For years, Airbnb gave hosts extensive discretion to accept or reject a guest after seeing little more than a name and a picture, believing that eliminating anonymity was the best way for the company to build trust. However, the apartment rental platform failed to track or account for the possibility that this could facilitate discrimination. Should Airbnb change the design of its platform to reduce discrimination? And what’s the best way to measure the success of any changes? On the latest episode of #ColdCall, professor Michael Luca discusses his case, “Racial Discrimination on Airbnb.” Listen at the link in our bio.
