Two Harvard Business School Faculty Awarded Prize for Course on Sustainability

BOSTON—Harvard Business School faculty members Rebecca Henderson and George Serafeim have been named grand prize winners of the Dr. Alfred N. and Lynn Manos Page Prize for Sustainability Issues in Business by the Darla Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina for their popular second-year MBA elective course Reimagining Capitalism. The course, which encourages students to take a critical look at capitalism and understand the role that private firms have in addressing public issues such as environmental degradation and income inequality, was praised for its effective design, consideration of new concepts of sustainability and challenges to current business paradigms, and up-to-date readings. Now in its eleventh year, the Page Prize is designed to encourage and support efforts to introduce or substantially upgrade sustainability courses or associated course work into the curricula of business schools, both nationally and internationally. The prize received a record number of submissions this year, covering a wide range of business disciplines and demonstrating “the increasing commitment of business schools to prepare tomorrow’s managers to lead socially responsible organizations that encourage economic development and environmental stewardship.” Senior Lecturer John Macomber was named co-winner of Prize last year for his second-year MBA elective Building Sustainable Cities and Infrastructure. 
Rebecca Henderson
In her research, Henderson, Harvard’s John and Natty McArthur University Professor, explores how organizations respond to large-scale technological shifts, most recently in regard to energy and the environment. Her recent publications include Leading Sustainable Change: An Organizational Perspective, a book she co-edited with two HBS colleagues; an essay titled “The Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Innovation;” and a note on “Climate Change in 2017: Implications for Business.” She is a Fellow of the British Academy and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a member of the board of Ceres, a sustainability nonprofit organization focusing on leadership and economic solutions, and of Amgen and Idexx, two S&P 500 companies. 
George Serafeim
Serafeim, the School’s Jakurski Family Associate Professor of Business Administration, who will become a full professor with tenure on July 1, does research that centers on measuring, driving, and communicating corporate performance and social impact. His work has been published in numerous academic and practitioner journals, including Strategic Management Journal, Management Science, MIT Sloan Management Review, and Harvard Business Review. He has received numerous awards and recognitions for his research on corporate sustainability and sustainable investing, including the Pericles Leadership Award for his services to his native Greece. In addition, he has served in several nonprofit organizations, including the board of directors of the High Meadows Institute, the working group of the Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism, and the Standards Council of the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board. |
