“That is exactly what my HBS experience has been—magical, transformative, and rewarding! ”

Coming to HBS is like…

Opening the secret door to Narnia. As an applicant, it seemed like a magical land far, far away where my wildest dreams (and professional ambitions) could come true. And, during the time that I have been here, that is exactly what my HBS experience has been—magical, transformative, and rewarding!

What is your most memorable classroom moment?

For Halloween, all of my 93 section-mates dressed up in full costumes (i.e. tigers, hotdogs, and rockstars, make-up and all) and tried to remain serious while answering case questions. It was hilarious! Section I is filled with brilliant and humble students from over 35 countries who are equally impressive as they are kind. The connection we have fostered has left an indelible impact on me and I am so grateful that HBS brought us together.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

The best thing about my childhood was my Mom, who created a deeply enriching environment for me. Outside of schoolwork, she encouraged me to participate in in performing arts, mock government, sports, cheerleading, church activities, and engineering camps. I even attended an aviation camp where I flew an airplane! She taught me the power of experiences and stretching beyond my comfort zone to develop, learn, and grow.

What is the best thing about your hometown?

I spent my adolescence in Kokomo, Indiana. In 6th grade, my science teacher built a life sized “space shuttle” with a control room, working monitors, production lights, and audio system in our classroom. Throughout the year, we learned about the science and technology of astronauts, robotic engineering, and mission control specialists which culminated into a final “mission” and week-long field trip at NASA’s Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. The creativity and dedication of teachers like that one were the best part of my hometown experience.

What has changed about your understanding of leadership?

I am a dual-degree candidate at HBS and HKS where I am exploring how to best serve the public and/or private sectors. Professor Ronald Heifetz stated, “Exercising leadership and bearing personal responsibility require seeing the difference between oneself and one's role.” That distinction has taught me: 1) Leadership is an evolving journey, rather than a final destination; 2) It is imperative that I have a personal ‘Board of Directors’ that can keep me grounded while navigating this incredible journey.
