“While it’s important to have an opinion, it’s even more important to give yourself the opportunity to change your mind. ”

Coming to HBS is like…

Walking into a classroom where you expect to find one teacher, and then realizing you have 91. Every person at HBS has a unique story and is an expert in an area in which you’re not. It can be overwhelming, humbling and inspiring all at once.

What is your most memorable classroom moment?

Without a doubt, the professor roasts. At the end of each semester, it’s tradition for each section to playfully roast the professors by remembering funny moments, awkward commentary, and mishaps from class. The roasts are hilarious and serve as the transition for when your professors become life-long mentors.

What is your favorite childhood memory?

Every summer, my mom would pile our family, including two dogs, into a minivan and we would drive from Michigan to Maine to spend the summer with my grandparents. We spent time at the beach, played board games, watched movies, and enjoyed the outdoors. Those summers taught me the importance of balance and how to slow down to enjoy small moments.

What is the best thing about your hometown?

Grand Rapids is home to dozens of craft breweries, is less than an hour away from the picturesque beaches of Lake Michigan and has an impressive art scene. Above all, the community is unparalleled; I still go back to my high school, Forest Hills Northern, to visit my old teachers.

What has changed about your understanding of leadership?

While it’s important to have an opinion, it’s even more important to give yourself the opportunity to change your mind. Great leaders look for reasons why they may be wrong, and why others may be right.
