Why did you choose this path at this point in time?
To get out of my comfort zone – to explore startup ideas, to meet people who don’t think like me, to learn about what goes into making a team and a product successful. I knew I’d never have fewer responsibilities than I do now (after all, life only gets messier), so I figured there wouldn’t be a better time than now.
Coming to HBS is like…
Drinking from a firehose. We joke at HBS that each day is filled with so many experiences that a day feels like a week. For example, within a few days, I met more new people at HBS than I would have in a year of work in the real world.
Being part of the HBS community is like…
Discovering that you’re a tiny fish in a giant ocean. But rather than focus on how tiny you are, you learn to appreciate how much your life can be enriched by all the other ocean life.
As a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
I wanted to be a teacher – so much so that I would spend hours pretending to teach things to my stuffed animals. I’d even fill my coloring books with grades and little comments for my “students!”
What is your favorite childhood memory?
My mum’s and my morning routine in England. After dropping my brother off at school, we’d stop at the park near my school while my mum did my hair (into braids or ponytails). Then we’d walk towards the school gates, hand in hand, and she’d sing “I Want to Hold Your Hand” by the Beatles.
Who is one person from your life that you admire the most today?
My late grandmother, who I affectionately called “Tima.” After a fruitful career as a history professor and researcher, Tima focused her energy on empowering impoverished women and eradicating illiteracy in India. She was a force with which to be reckoned, refusing to shy away from tough professional challenges regardless of what was going on in her personal life and regardless of the barriers and social norms that society imposed.
What’s the best thing about your hometown?
I don’t have one town I consider my “hometown,” since I grew up across England, the Bay Area, and Delhi. I love how, within the span of a few weeks, a place can go from feeling totally foreign to intimately familiar.
