Brian Ventura (MBA 2022) is one of two DEI officers for PRIDE, the LGBTQ+ club at HBS. Originally from Orlando, Florida, Brian identifies as a queer Afro-Latino and came to Boston ten years ago as a first-generation college student at Harvard College. He worked in fields ranging from financial services to catering to product management before returning to Harvard for his MBA. National Coming Out Day is October 11, 2021, and HBS will be supporting and participating in events that celebrate the LGBTQ+ community throughout October. Some students come out before business school, some students wait until they arrive on campus, and some who participate in events choose to keep their LGBTQ+ status private. In recognition of Pride month, we asked a few members of PRIDE, a Student Club at HBS, to share their thoughts about the significance of this time and why it matters to them. The responses remind us that Pride month is not simply a celebration for the out by the out but also by allies for the closeted. Before coming to HBS I was a submarine officer in the US Navy. Submarines were my entire life. They consumed all my working hours and much of my social life too, since almost all my friends were fellow submariners. Nevertheless, it was an incredible experience. I learned so much about leadership, service, and sacrifice. Through the adversity, I made some lifelong friendships. But there was something that the Navy lacked: a community for LGBTQ+ individuals. There were no other “out” individuals on my all-male submarine of 120 sailors. I never even knew that I needed such a community until I got to HBS and became a part of PRIDE. It has changed my perspective on everything. It’s so important to be a part of a community that fully understands what it means for me to be gay. [...]
